Chapter 9
Four years later
December 31st, 2006
6:45 a.m.
I was forced awake on a Sunday morning by the ringing of my cellular phone.
“Hello.” I mumbled, while trying to rub the sleep out of my eyes.
“Happy birrrthday to youuuu! Happy birthdayyy to you.” I heard Patricia singing on the other end, while I practically died laughing.
“Aww thank you love.” She started my morning the best way possible.
“My girl is 24 years old, woop woop!” She chuckled.
I let out a loud yarn and sat up to stretch.
“So anything planned?” She asked.
“I have no idea. You know how boring my life is.” I admitted.
“Girl, I already told you what you needed.” She said.
“And what’s that?” I asked.
“Some long hard wood.” She whispered before laughing aloud, but she was right.
My body hasn’t been examined by anyone other than my gynecologist in months.
“I wish I was there to celebrate with you.” She confessed.
Patricia had graduated two years earlier and move to Panama City with Devon.
“Yeah, me too. Anyways, how’s my God son?” I asked.
“Girl, he tearing my insides up. If he isn’t in my ribs, he’s on my bladder.” She complained.
I giggled. “Only nine more weeks.” I reminded her.
“Yup, and I cannot wait to get my body back.” She laughed.
I heard someone beeping in so I looked at my phone screen to see that my mother was calling.
“Tricia my mama is calling. Let me call you back. I love you.” I told her.
“I love you too.” She hung up and I clicked over.
“Hey mama,” I answered.
“Happy birthday baby girl.” She said in a sleepy voice.
I smiled, “Thank you mama. Go back to sleep.”
“Okay baby. See you in a little while.” She hung up.
I looked at my clock and noticed it was only 7 a.m.
I pulled my long brown hair into a ponytail, dressed in sweats, and went for my two mile run. While running, my phone began to ring.
“Hello,” I answered, while trying to catch my breath.
“I need you tonight.” Said my forty-five year old boss Liz.
“Well happy birthday to me too.” I said sarcastically.
“Oh dear! I am so sorry. Happy birthday.” She said bluntly.
I stretched my legs, while remaining on the phone with her.
“There’s a cocktail party tonight. I’m trying to get a deal on the next issue. We’re talking over ten thousand dollars and I need you there.” She brought to my attention.
“What time?” I asked.
“Eight. I will text you the address. I will see you there. Muah!” She said before hanging up the phone.
During the second semester of my senior year in college, Liz hired me as her part-time assistant. She was the CEO of the magazine ‘Titanium’ and it was popular in Chicago, as well as surrounding states. I graduated with my Bachelors of Science degree in Business Management and fell in love with my job at ‘Titanium’. Once I graduated, Liz gave me the full-time position and I was making $22 an hour.
